The author is very gentle and starts with an important lesson on self-acceptance. The key to improving our health begins with accepting ourselves. For those of us in poor health, part of the root of this condition are hidden areas of our consciousness that are life negating, that do not want health.

What is so essential but not emphasized in the text is that extra pounds (along with pregnancy complications) is caused primarily by consumption of High Fructose Corn Syrup. That’s the synthetic sweetener in soda’s and most processed foods. Healthy whole foods usually do not convert to excess body fat. The reason why many people are struggling with weight is poor food selection. Their body is STARVING for nutrients, and they do not know where to get these nutrients from, and then they default to unhealthy and overly sweet foods which satisfy the hunger but that do not contain enough vitamins and nutrients. The cure for many is to return to a nutrient rich diet, filled with good fats (saturated fats, which usually help rid the body of excess fat tissue) and proteins, which calm hunger, dissipate sweet cravings and provide nourishment.

While “big, beautiful and pregnant” does have some helpful dietary advice, I think it is missing the point in not addressing the root cause of key difficulties that a Plus-Size woman will face during pregnancy. By returning to a whole foods program, Plus-Size women can feel healthy, have energy, and make the best effort for a good birth outcome and a healthy pregnancy. What is key, is to avoid the processed and refined junk and convenience foods of today.

Please see Healing Our Children: Because Your New Baby Matters! Sacred Wisdom for Preconception, Pregnancy, Birth and Parenting (ages 0-6) for a detailed list and explanation of toxic foods, versus health promoting foods with an emphasis on truly nourishing ourselves and our children.

I was immediately put off this book by the big BMI chart at the very beginning, and further put off by the nutrition advice. If there’s any time you shouldn’t be eating low-fat foods, it’s when you’re pregnant. The medical and exercise advice isn’t anything you won’t find in another book, and there is NO information on infertility, miscarriage, stillbirth, or infant loss.

I highly recommend The Mother of All Pregnancy books instead.

I got this book when I found out I was pregnant with twins. It is a good book and had great advice. I only gained 20lbs with the twins because I really watched what I ate, thanks to this book. However, it did lack in some areas.
